Alpine Education Staff Program

How to Become a NRM Alpine Education Staff or Assessor

If you are an PSIA-certified Level III alpine member in good standing and are interested in furthering your education and working toward becoming a education staff member or assessor for NRM, this page will describe how to make that happen.

Education staff members and assessors are hired in three ways (described below), all of which must go through the hiring event held each spring.

The IT (In Training) program is a three-year program for possible future education staff members and assessors. The group has their own coach to help them work towards their goals. They work together as a group at Fall Training each season. IT’s who attend Fall Training are encouraged to attend mid-season Training within the same season.

In order to participate in this program, you must submit the following to the NRM region office before November 1 of the current year:

  • A Letter of Intent detailing your goals as an education staff member for NRM and what you would bring to the region.
  • A Letter of Recommendation from a member of the skiing community stating why you would be a good fit for the program.

The NRM Education Director, CEO and IT Coaches will review the applicants submitted materials and verify their standing as per the above. Applicants to the program will be notified by the Education Director by November 15th as to whether or not they have been accepted to the program.

Once an IT is admitted to the program, their three-season term begins; it is the duty of the IT to sign up for all trainings they wish to attend. At the end of each season, a hiring event will be held to hire education staff members and assessors for the following season.

To be eligible to attend the hiring event, an IT must:

  • Register at least two weeks prior for the event.
  • Be a member of PSIA NRM.
  • Have attended all three days of Fall Training of the current season.
  • Have obtained their Children’s Specialist 2 (CS2) assessment-based certificate.
  • Have shadowed two events: an Alpine Level I assessment event and another event to be determined by the IT coach.

More information on the IT program is available in the FAQs.

This pathway is for those who are currently on staff in another region and/or are currently a member of the Alpine National Team and would like to work as a education staff member or assessor with PSIA NRM.

In order to participate in this program, you must fulfill the following criteria:

– Submit a letter of recommendation from your previous/current employer (region) to the NRM region office.
– Attend NRM Fall Training for the current season.
– Have your Children’s Specialist 2 (CS2) assessment-based certificate.

If hired, you will be required to shadow a NRM alpine assessment before you can work.

This pathway is for those who are currently on staff in NRM as either a education staff member or assessor and would like to continue that work (after their term ends), or for those who are currently employed as education staff member but would like to be hired as an assessor.

If you are a returning education staff member, you may register for the spring hiring event. The NRM region office will prepare a report for the coaches detailing:

  • Number of days worked each season
  • Number of training days each season
  • Number of events worked at home and away
  • Number of days training at events outside of NRM
  • Synopsis of event evaluation scores

The process will happen each spring and registration at least two weeks before the event is required. Historically, the on-snow skills assessment part of the hiring process has happened after the final certification exams. However, NRM may hire employees when the need arises.

This event is open to:

  • Returning education staff members
  • NRM members in good standing that have completed at least one year in the IT program and met all of the requirements (see above for requirements).
  • Transferring education members from other regions and National Team Members who have met all of the requirements (see above for requirements).

Coaches/selectors determine the process for the on-snow portion of the hiring event and make recommendations for hiring to the Alpine discipline chair. The Alpine discipline chair will make the final determination as which candidates to hire based on the recommendations, along with administrative reviews and past performance.

More information on the hiring event is available in the FAQs.
