CORE GROUPS: (choose 1)
The AM core clinics will be like a group lesson, with the same group and DCE for all two/three mornings. This format allows for consistency and a few days to work on things with the same DCE. When you registering for Fall Fest you will indicate your desired level of pace and terrain; hot (black terrain fast), medium (black/blue medium pace), or mild (green/blue/maybe a little black cruising). Then on Friday/Saturday you will go with your respective hot, medium, or mild group and make further splits on snow.

Children’s Specialist 1 (CS1) and Children’s Specialist 2 (CS2)
All-day Friday and half-day (AM) both Saturday and Sunday
Led by members of the children's education clinician team, this educational course will be held both on and off snow and will investigate how children and teens move, behave, and learn as they grow. Additionally, the clinicians will facilitate discussions and activities that will help instructors design lesson plans that encourage exploration of the mountain environment on skis or snowboards. Instructors will be given a self-study handbook that quizzes their knowledge about the information shared during the course as well as information referenced from the PSIA Children's Instruction Manual (Can be borrowed from fellow instructors or purchased from the NRM office or the PSIA Accessories catalog prior to the start of the course). Instructors completing the course, along with the workbook will receive either their Children’s Specialist 1 or 2 (depending on which course you took). This is a nationally recognized certificate program. Prerequisites: PSIA-AASI membership and level 1 certification (in any discipline) for the CS1 and level 2 certification for the CS2. The workbook is due before you show up. Submit them to the NRM office by the 3rd of December. Refer to psia‐nrm.org for more info on course information and evaluation criteria. This certificate is recommended for all snowsports staff interested in leading their clients into freestyle terrain. Prerequisites: PSIA-AASI membership and level 1 certification (in any discipline). ELECTIVES: (choose 1 per day)
Alpine: Certification Head Start
Level 2 Saturday
Heading to a certification event this year? Start your season off right with an NRM examiner who will explain the process and head you in the right direction.
Alpine: Pattern Breaking
Friday and/or Saturday
Do you consistently hear the same feedback? Find new moves to start this season off in style.
Alpine: Old Dogs, New Tricks
Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday with Michael Hickey, NRM clinician and National Team alumnus
Come along and uncover new ways to do many of the things we've done on skis in the past that may be getting to be a bit challenging. How do we adapt or help our students adapt? How can we seemingly slow the “aging on skis” process? Young, or not so young, come along for an afternoon of discovery.
Alpine: Off Piste
Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday
Let’s see what Big Sky has to offer and head to un-groomed terrain for some early season fun. A member of our NRM Education Staff will give you tactics for skiing off piste terrain, or try to turn your legs to rubber. The choice is yours. Available in hot, medium or mild.
Alpine: To Rocker or Not to Rocker
Fri and/or Sat
Reading the gear issues of this year’s ski magazines shows how much ski companies have embraced the concept of “rocker” in their skis. Most skis even have the amount of rocker printed on the ski along with sidecut and radius. The question isn’t really, “should I try it?” The question should be, “how can I use this to help my students become more successful sooner and, basically, enjoy the sport even more?” This clinic will address the second question in all sorts of aspects from how to size the skis, to how our movement patterns differ, and how this applies to the skills concept. You do not have to have rocker skis to join this clinic, but skiing on some during the clinic will add to the learning experience. If you have specific questions regarding this elective clinic please contact Tom Marshall at thomas.marshall.79@gmail.com.
Alpine/Telemark: Biomechanics of Skiing
Friday and/or Saturday with Mary Marshall, NRM Telemark Clinician and Doctor of Physical Therapy
If you ever struggle with describing, understanding and visualizing anatomical movement, or if you want to brush up on anatomical terminology, this might be the clinic for you. No, we don’t want to alienate students with big words, but having a more in-depth understanding of biomechanics is only going to give you more clarity when it comes to analyzing and communicating, so your teaching is successful. The clinic will have both indoor and outdoor components and focus on basic anatomy and biomechanics relevant to understanding and teaching skiing. You will learn the planes of movement, the structure and function of relevant joints and the musculature influencing these joints. You will then have an opportunity to explore the range of motion of these joints through skiing movements and with different skills. We will then assess how this varies between individuals and between the two disciplines. The objective of this clinic is to give you a stronger anatomical background and understanding of how to effect change in students and potentially your own skiing.
