How to get involved in the DCE Program

Open to current Alpine Level III members who are interested in furthering their education and working toward becoming a clinician or examiner.

Steps to enter the program:

1. Attend the one-day Advanced Educator clinic offered the Friday of Fall Festival. This clinic provides further training after Level III and will also explain more about how the divisional clinician and examiner (DCE) program works.

2. After completion of the Advanced Educator clinic, applicants may apply to join the DCE-in training (DCE-IT) program. Apply in writing to the Alpine Chair and Assistant Alpine Chair with a letter of intent, letter of recommendation and resume. The best way to apply is by sending your letter and resume via e-mail well in advance of Fall DCE-IT training. The applications will be reviewed by the alpine committee and the advanced educator clinician for acceptance into the program.

Once accepted into the program:

1. Attend Fall DCE-IT training. It is recommended you attend each year.

2. You are eligible to observe educational clinics, prep clinics and exams. You do not receive payment or travel reimbursement for events you observe; you are a volunteer. Observing events is an excellent learning and training opportunity that should be taken advantage of as much as possible. If you would like to observe an event, contact the Assistant Alpine Chair well ahead of time.

3. Attend Alpine Committee meetings (optional).

After you have attended one fall DCE-IT training, you may try out to be either a clinician or an examiner.

Clinician

The primary role of a clinician (also sometimes called "clinician-ers") is to create and lead educational clinics. Clinicians may also give Level I events and proctor written exams. See a complete description of the clinician program.

Clinician tryouts:

A. A two-day, on-snow tryout is offered every year in the Spring. Cost is $90. Tryouts will also include an indoor interview.

B. To qualify for the tryout you must have attended at least one fall DCE-IT training.

Additional DCE Hiring Changes - revised in 2007
- This is not a level of certification, it is a paid position.
- A scorecard will not be used.
- No exit interview.
- A specific comment sheet will be mailed to each participant with their results.
- Hiring Events for Clinician and Examiner will not be on the same days.
- The same selectors will be used for the Clinician and Examine Hiring Events.
- Staffing for Clinician and Examiner positions are based on the needs of the division.

Requirements to maintain clinician status:

  • Member in good standing of NRM (dues paid in full)
  • Actively teaching in PSIA-NRM and attend DCE training each year.
  • Every three years at DCE training, clinicians will be checked for updated knowledge and skiing skills.
  • No term limit as long as requirements are met.

Note: All examiners hired prior to the tryout system implemented in 2004-05 automatically become clinicians.

Examiner

An examiner's primary job is to give prep clinics and exams, but examiners are also encouraged to create and lead educational clinics.

Examiner tryouts:

A. A two-day, on-snow tryout offered every year in the Spring. Cost $90. Tryouts will be conducted in an exam format.

B. Along with the on-snow tryout, interviews will be held by the Alpine Chair and Assistant Alpine Chair in the mornings and evenings. A representative from the Board of Directors will be present during the job interviews. If the Chair or Assistant Chair is trying out, the Board representative will be the interviewer.

Additional DCE Hiring Event Changes - revised in 2007
- This is not a level of certification, it is a paid position.

Requirements to maintain examiner status:

  • Member in good standing of NRM (dues paid in full)
  • Actively teaching in PSIA-NRM and attend DCE training each year
  • Commit to availability for all exam prep clinic and exam dates
  • Examiners will have a three year term, and may try out again at the completion of their terms.
  • The examiner selectors/coaches will give each examiner a written or verbal evaluation each year during DCE training.

There will be a minimum of, but not restricted to, eight U.S. examiners.

Selectors

  • Selectors are the coaches and leaders of the examiner team and are responsible for developing training for the alpine DCE program.
  • Selectors have a 3-year term. The examiner with the highest score at the tryouts will move into the position that is vacated by the selector whose term is ending.

A member with extenuating circumstances may request a waiver of the above requirements by submitting a request in writing to the Alpine Chair. Requests will be considered by the Alpine Committee.
