All Level III members are eligible to further their education and involvement through the Divisional Clinician/Examiner (DCE) program. This program is open to all Level III members, and is a requirement for members interested in becoming part of the divisional staff. See profiles of our NRM snowboard DCEs.
There are two parts of the DCE program:
- DCE training, held every year right before Fall Festival.
- Exam and clinic shadowing and then working as a back-up examiner at exams. Shadowing means you observe the exam or clinic without taking on a specific coaching or scoring role. Working as a back-up examiner or clinician means that you have an active role in the clinic or exam.
If you are interested in learning more about snowboard instruction and furthering your own development after Level III, then participating in DCE training is a great step to take. If you want to go even further and work toward becoming an examiner or a clinician, then there is a pipeline to follow. Completion of these steps does not necessarily guarantee that you will automatically be an examiner. The snowboard chairperson has the responsibility of assessing each DCE member and deciding on their readiness to give clinics or exams. Feedback will be given to trainees after each event so that you will always be informed of your progress.

If you are interested in shadowing or working as a back-up, you need to inform the snowboard chairperson well before the event. The chairperson will make all decisions regarding who will shadow, back-up, or give clinics and exams.
DCEs will send completed event summaries to the chairperson no later than two weeks after the event.
In addition to DCE training, there are two snowboard committee meetings per year. All DCEs are encouraged to participate in these meetings, as this is where many of the decisions are made and ideas take shape. Every member can contribute valuable input to this process.
Starting with the 2005-2006 season, all new DCEs who apply to become a clinician or examiner will need to have earned their Accredited Children's Educator (ACE). This includes a 2-day clinic plus completion of the workbook. The ACE must be fully complete prior to being hired to work an event.
For DCEs who joined the program before the 2005-2006 season, it is highly recommended that you obtain ACE accreditation, and the chairperson will consider this in the evaluation of existing DCEs.
