NRM Nordic process for certification
new National Standards for Nordic Certification (Word document)
new Nordic Exam preparation materials (see below)

The NRM Nordic program has some new tools for exam preparation. Please download and read the materials that are applicable to your exam.

The Nordic Handbook (large pdf file) applies to all Nordic disciplines and should be read as part of your exam preparation for all levels of telemark and cross-country certification.

For each type of certification event, there is a specific workbook and checklist listed below. The workbook must be completed before your certification event and the checklist will be completed at your certification event.  This certification workbook and checklist is designed to help you verify and improve your current understanding of technical knowledge, teaching knowledge and skiing ability on your path to becoming a certified Nordic Instructor. Answers to the questions are found in the Nordic Handbook, the Nordic Technical Manual, and the Core Concepts Manual.

PSIA-NRM Telemark Level I Certification Workbook and Checklist (PDF file)

PSIA-NRM Telemark Level II and III Certification Workbook and Checklist (PDF file)

PSIA-NRM Cross Country Level I Certification Workbook and Checklist (PDF file)

PSIA-NRM Cross Country Level II and III Certification Workbook and Checklist (PDF file)

As you train for an exam, be sure to understand the certification standards that are used to certify instructors. Download a copy of the new National Standards for Nordic Certification (Word document)

You will also want to be familiar with the most recent Nordic Technical Manual that was published by PSIA national last season. The manual covers all aspects of Nordic instruction. Members can get the book via the order form. (from PSIA National web site)

NRM Process for Nordic Certification

Below you will find brief descriptions of the certification exams in this division.

Level I Certification

Level I certification is intended for entry-level or first- year instructors. A Level I instructor is certified to teach beginner Nordic lessons, whether the student is entirely new to skiing or is crossing over from another discipline.

Level I certification is achieved after passing a 2 day Level I evaluated clinic. This clinic includes a written test, skiing, teaching scenarios and discussions. Level I events are typically offered several times during each ski season, at areas around the division. In some cases the Level I clinic is offered "in house," meaning it is organized and subsidized by a specific ski school. Other Level I events are run by NRM and appear on the events schedule each year.

For the criteria to obtain Level I certification, see the national certification standards (Word document). Once an instructor obtains Level I certification, they are required to obtain 6 educational credit hours every 2 years in order to maintain their Level I status.

Level II and III Certification

Level II and III certification is intended for upper-level instructors who have been teaching Nordic for several seasons and/or for telemark, have certification II/III in alpine with an understanding of the technical principals of telemark skiing . A Level II instructor is certified to teach intermediate Nordic lessons, while a Level III instructor is certified to teach all levels of Nordic lessons.

Level II and Level III certification involves a 3 day, all-inclusive, preparation clinic and exam. This includes a written test, skiing, teaching scenarios and discussions. The Level II and III Nordic downhill exams are typically offered once per season, but track/skate exams may be offered every other year if demand is not great enough to offer the event every year.

For the criteria to obtain Level II or III certification, see the national certification standards (Word document). Once an instructor obtains Level II or III certification, they are required to obtain 6 educational credit hours every 2 years in order to maintain their status.
